CLEVELAND, OH - The Baseball Writers Association of America today announced the selection of Cleveland Guardians Manager Stephen Vogt American League Manager of the Year, beating out Toronto’s John Schneider (91 points) and Seattle’s Dan Wilson (50 points). Vogt recorded 17 first-place votes and 113 voting points overall.
Vogt, 41, guided the 2025 Guardians to its 13th and most dramatic American League Central Division title, recording a mark of 88-74 (.543) to clinch the division on the final day of the season. The 2025 Guardians set MLB records for overall (15.5 games, July 8) and September (11.0 games, Sept. 4) deficits overcome to win a division or league title, surpassing the 1914 Boston Braves (15.0GB) and the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals (8.5 games), respectively. The Guardians posted MLB-best records in September (20-7, .741) and the second half (42-25, .627) after entering the final month with a 0.2% chance of winning the division (Fangraphs).
The Guardians faced their share of adversity along the way, enduring a 10-game losing streak, June 26-July 6, that left the club a season-low 40-48 and 15.5 games behind the Tigers. Following that low ebb, Cleveland went 47-26 (.644) to finish off the campaign, recording its own 10-game winning streak (Sept. 11-20) and at one point won 15 out of 16 games. Cleveland was the fourth team in Major League history to make the Postseason despite a 10-game-or-more losing streak (2017 Dodgers, 1982 Braves, 1951 NY Giants). The Clevelanders were an exceptional team in close games in 2025, owning an MLB-best 50-33 (.602) record in games determined by 2-or-fewer runs.
Vogt joins Milwaukee’s Pat Murphy (also 2024-2025), Kevin Cash (TB, 2020-21) and Bobby Cox (ATL, 2004-05) as the only back-to-back winners in the award’s history dating back to 1983. He is the only member of that group to accomplish it in his first two seasons managing. Vogt is also the only Cleveland skipper to earn consecutive Postseason berths to open their managerial tenures with the club and his 180 wins trail only Al Lopez (186) and Charlie Manuel (181) among Cleveland managers’ first two seasons.
