In Shelby, the fire chief is retiring at the end of the month and will be headed to the classroom.
According to RichlandSource.com, Mike Thompson has spent 24 years with the Shelby Fire Department, and has been chief, since April of 2015.
Thompson's last day at the fire station will be July 31st, and his final day with the city of Shelby, is August 12th.
Mike Thompson, who had a background in education, will be teaching the new first responder program this year at the Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Shelby.
Mayor Steve Schag said, Pioneer could not have chosen a better person to lead the new program.
