Mansfield Playhouse Reaches First Campaign Goal of $1.4 Million

MANSFIELD, June 20, 2025 – Just three months after launching its first-ever capital campaign, the Mansfield Playhouse is growing community support for its $7.5 million effort to build a fully accessible, state-of-the-art building in downtown Mansfield. The Mansfield Playhouse, a cultural cornerstone in Ohio and the second oldest continuously operating community theater in the state, has reached its first campaign goal of $1.4 million through family foundations and community donations.

“I have been moved by this community’s encouragement and early support,” said Doug Wertz, president and artistic director of the Mansfield Playhouse. “Reaching this first $1.4 million milestone shows just how deeply our residents believe in preserving our legacy, breathing new life into downtown Mansfield and the power of the arts to unite and uplift a community. Quarter by quarter, dollar by dollar, we hope to meet our overall goal to save this community treasure, which has been a pillar of Mansfield for a century.”

The new facility – planned for the current playhouse property at 95 East Third Street – will replace the aging, multi-story structure with a modern, one-story building that is fully ADA-compliant, featuring a theater and second smaller stage, improved amenities, and space designed to better serve audiences, volunteers, and performers of all abilities.

“The Mansfield Playhouse has always been more than a stage, it’s a space where stories are shared, talents are discovered, and our community comes together,” said Aurelio Diaz, Mansfield city councilman, Ward 5. “This project not only honors the Playhouse’s rich history but sets the stage for a more inclusive, vibrant downtown. We’re proud to stand behind this effort. I encourage our community to get involved, either through donations or spreading the word, to ensure everyone can continue to participate in and enjoy the art of local theater."

The project represents the first major new building construction in downtown Mansfield in 30 years and is poised to serve as a beacon for the arts and a catalyst for continued economic revitalization.

The Mansfield Playhouse invites individuals, families, businesses, and philanthropic organizations to join this historic effort. Contributions of all sizes will help bring the vision of a new, inclusive community theater to life.

Why Mansfield Needs a New Playhouse

The new theater will address critical needs, including:

Full Accessibility – The current facility lacks modern accessibility features, preventing some community members from attending performances and participating in productions. The new Playhouse will be fully ADA-compliant, ensuring that everyone can enjoy live theater.

Preserving a Community Treasure – Founded in 1925, the non-profit Playhouse organization has fostered generations of actors, volunteers, and theatergoers. The new building will honor this legacy while equipping the Playhouse for a thriving future.

Revitalizing Downtown Mansfield – This will be the first major new building construction in downtown Mansfield in 30 years, enhancing the area’s cultural and economic vitality. The new building will stand as a beacon for the arts and serve as a catalyst for downtown growth.

Sustaining Affordable, High-Quality Theater – The Mansfield Playhouse is committed to keeping ticket prices affordable and making live performances accessible to all. A modern facility will enable the organization to operate more efficiently and expand its programming.

The new Playhouse will be built on the current property, with the existing structure being removed to create much-needed parking. The project’s success will depend on broad community support, including new donor relationships, expanded sponsorship opportunities, and grassroots fundraising efforts.

"This project is about more than bricks and mortar—it’s about securing the future of the Mansfield Playhouse for the next 100 years," Wertz said. "With the support of our community, we can create a landmark that will inspire and entertain generations to come."
