MANSFIELD, Ohio- OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital rolled out the red carpet for nurses during National Nurses Week. In a scholarship ceremony, Curt Gingrich MD, hospital president of Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals, voiced his appreciation for nurses and their impact on patient care.

“Thank you for driving and influencing our culture and thank you for the way in which you care for patients,” said Dr. Gingrich.

Leaders at Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals showed their gratitude for nurses not just with praise, but scholarships. In fact, this year Mansfield and Shelby Hospital nurses received a record number of scholarships, totaling nearly $80,000.

“I’m super excited that we’re able to award a record number of associate scholarship dollars to help with their professional growth and development,” said Elizabeth Daniels M.Ed., BSN, chief nursing officer of Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals. “This just strengthens the commitment to our associates in showing up to be their best selves.”

For nurses like Emma Ardis, PRN, these scholarships are instrumental in covering the cost of continuing education. She heads to CRNA school this summer, and now has $5,000 from the Midwest Physicians CRNA Scholarship to help her along the way.

“I didn’t know the amount until today,” said Ardis. “So, I’m very excited and grateful.”

The OhioHealth Foundation has also created a brand new scholarship for non-nurses, totaling more than $12,000.

“Whether in diagnostics, therapy or support services, your expertise directly contributes to better patient outcomes and a stronger care team,” said Simon Bisson, Vice President of Philanthropy for the OhioHealth Foundation.

Two of the many recipients of the Mansfield and Shelby Continuing Education Scholarship, Mackenzie Minner SLP and Jordan Witts SLP, plan to use the money towards specific programs in speech therapy.

“I plan on using my scholarship for a FEES course,” said Witts. “FEES is just another way to look at the swallow through a small camera that looks through the patient’s nose and looks down at the throat.”

No matter what these associates use their scholarships for, Dr. Gingrich says they're helping to make them the best versions of themselves, and ultimately, improve culture and care at Mansfield and Shelby Hospitals.
