Seven-Year-Old Boy Sets Up Hot Chocolate Stand To Help Pay For Border Wall

A young boy from Texas decided that he wanted to help President Donald Trump raise money to pay for the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Seven-year-old Benton Stevens was watching Trump's State of the Union address and asked his mother, Jennifer, to explain Trump's comments on the border wall.

“He wanted to know about the wall, so we explained what it was about, and he (Benton) was like ‘I want to raise money for the wall,’” she told KXAN.

Benton and his family decided to set up a hot chocolate stand at a nearby strip mall last Saturday (February 16). He sold the cups for $2 each, and they included "Beto O'Rourke" marshmallows. For an additional 50 cents, you could upgrade to larger "Nancy Pelosi" marshmallows.

Not everybody was happy with the stand, which featured a large sign that read "proceeds help Trump build the wall." A few people started complaining to the businesses in the strip mall, while others went online to voice their displeasure.

“I guess some liberals – or whatever you want to call them – they were griping at the owner (of the store) and going in and yelling at him and slamming him on Facebook,” Stevens said.

Due to the complaints, they decided to shut down the stand for the day. Despite being outside for just one hour, Benton managed to make $231.

Benton was undeterred by the complaints and convinced his parents to let him go back out the following day to try and raise more money. People continued to harass the young boy, accusing the family of being racist.

“He was called a little Hitler yesterday,” Mrs. Stevens said. “A guy pointed at him in his car, and then he said that we didn’t like brown people. I don’t understand that at all.”

Jennifer and her husband Shane, who are both politically active with the National Republican Committee, also set up a Venmo account to collect donations. Between the online contributions and the money he made selling hot chocolate, Benton has raised nearly $5,000. His parents said they will use their political connections to ensure that the money will be used to fund the construction of the border wall.

“We’re going to get it into the wall,” she said. “There’s a GoFundMe page, and we’re also part of the RNC, and we’re pretty connected there so we will 100 percent make sure it goes towards the wall.”
